Toru Takemitsu was een van de meest veelzijdige Japanse componisten uit de 20e eeuw. Men kent vooral zijn soundtracks van films, zoals 'RAN', geregisseerd door Akira Kurosawa. Een ander uitstekend muziekstuk voor fluit en gitaar van hem is 'Toward the sea'. De compositie werd geïnspireerd de roman 'Moby Dick' van Melville. Maar Takemitsu schreef veel meer kamermuziek voor fluit en gitaar - zijn favoriete instrumenten. Daarin wordt de Japanse, Latijns-Amerikaanse en pop muziek weerspiegeld, zoals liedjes door the Beatles. Astor Piazzolla was de uitvinder van Tango Nuevo en hij verhoogde die van de dansgelegenheid naar het concertpodium. Wij hebben een twaalftal van zijn tango’s gekozen om te spelen in combinatie met stukken van Heitor Villa-Lobos en andere componisten uit Zuid-Amerika.
